Horse Summer Camp Near Me: What Parents Should Know Before Booking

If you’ve been searching for a “horse summer camp near me,” chances are you’re hoping to find something that goes beyond just ponies and pastures. Finding the right summer camp can be a challenge, especially when you’re looking for something that offers more than just screen-free time. If your child loves animals or you’re hoping to help them build confidence, responsibility, and real-world skills, a horseback riding summer camp might be the perfect fit.

At Switch Willo Stables, we offer a weeklong summer experience that blends horsemanship, hands-on learning, and fun in the sun — all just 15 minutes from downtown Austin and 5 minutes from the Domain.

Here’s what parents should know before signing up.

What Makes Horse Camp Different?

Unlike many traditional day camps, horse camps offer a unique blend of emotional growth and physical engagement. Campers don’t just learn to ride — they learn to care. They groom, tack, feed, and form real bonds with their horses, all while developing structure, patience, and responsibility.

At Switch Willo Stables, we’ve seen firsthand how early barn experiences help shape stronger, more confident kids — and we’ve been doing it for generations. For over 60 years, Switch Willo has been a cornerstone of Austin’s equestrian community. Our award-winning summer program — voted Best Equestrian Camp 15 years in a row by Austin Family Magazine — blends structured instruction with classic summer fun for children ages 5 to 12.

Set on 26 beautifully shaded acres just minutes away from the Domain in north Austin, our state-certified facility provides a safe, welcoming environment for young riders of all experience levels. Here, campers don’t just ride — they grow, connect, and thrive through hands-on horse care, teamwork, and skill-building that lasts far beyond the summer.

A Look Inside Camp Switch Willo

Each day is packed with purpose. Campers ride daily, learn how to care for horses, and even get to watch professional farrier (horse shoeing) demonstrations. There are horse care lessons, arts and crafts, a swimming pool to cool off in, and plenty of team-building fun.

On Friday mornings, families are invited to watch their child participate in a horse show — a proud moment for every young rider.

Here are a few key features parents love:

  • 26 shaded acres of safe, peaceful riding space

  • Air-conditioned buildings for indoor activities

  • A swimming pool to balance out active days

  • Small-group daily riding instruction with experienced and state-certified trainers

  • Horse shoeing demonstrations

  • Horse care lessons (learn how to groom, tack, and feed horses!)

  • Creative arts & crafts

  • Our Sundry Shack snack bar (because sno cones make everything better)

  • Morning and afternoon extended care options (8am–5pm)

Who Is Camp For?

Camp Switch Willo is designed for kids ages 5 to 12, and no previous riding experience is required. Whether your child has never been around horses or is already horse-obsessed, we meet each camper where they are and help them feel confident and supported.

Why Families Keep Coming Back

Switch Willo has been part of Austin’s equestrian community since 1963, and many families who came to ride here as kids are now sending their own children. Our camp isn’t just about horses — it’s about building confidence, connection, and childhood memories that last.

Here’s what parents often tell us:

She came home more confident every day.”
“He hasn’t stopped talking about the horse he rode!”
“This was her favorite camp of the summer.”

This isn’t just a horse camp—it’s a community. Parents love the structured activities, professional staff, and the fact that their kids come home happy, confident, and tired in the best way. Campers build friendships, learn respect for animals, and leave with stories they’ll talk about all year.
